What are the Nationwide claim values for each injury?
The injury and its treatment put your claim in the ranges below, whether you are claiming against the other driver's Nationwide policy or using uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage on your own Nationwide policy. The division of fault also affects the value, and payment under either policy stops at that coverage's limit.

Read the full name on the insurance card, policy, or letter: the company handling the claim can have a different name from the brand.

The NAIC lists Colonial County Mutual Insurance Company as licensed in Texas only. The NAIC lists Titan Insurance Company as licensed in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, and Michigan. Nationwide's claim app says Washington auto insurance is written by Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company.
Why an Allied or Harleysville name still appears
Insurance Journal reported on September 11, 2014 that Nationwide was bringing its products and subsidiaries under the Nationwide brand, including Allied, Harleysville, and Scottsdale. Nationwide's Harleysville page now says, "Harleysville is now Nationwide." Allied, AMCO, and Depositors remain company names on policies and letters.
Nationwide's affiliated-company list names both "ALLIED Property and Casualty Insurance Company" and "ALLIED Insurance Company of America". The NAIC record in the table spells the former "ALLIED Property & Casualty Insurance Company". Nationwide's claims FAQ footer says, "Not all Nationwide affiliated companies are mutual companies".
Which Titan Insurance Company belongs to the group?
Prudential Financial's May 23, 2003 Securities and Exchange Commission filing reported an agreement to sell its specialty auto business, THI Holdings, (Delaware) Inc., to Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company. First Acceptance Corporation's April 27, 2015 filing described THI Holdings and two Titan companies as Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company affiliates, and Nationwide's affiliated-company page lists Titan Insurance Company.
The NAIC separately identifies "Titan Insurance Company, Inc. a Risk Retention Group" as code 11153 in Charleston, South Carolina; that company is not on Nationwide's affiliated-company list as of November 5, 2026.

How do you report and follow a Nationwide insurance claim?
Call 1-800-421-3535 to report a crash involving a driver insured by Nationwide; Nationwide's contact page lists that auto claims line as available at any time. You can also report through Nationwide's online auto form when you have the policyholder's policy number and last name.
Nationwide's form calls a customer a "member" and offers the option "I was involved in an accident with a Nationwide member". Select that option if you are reporting a crash with its policyholder. The form asks for the Nationwide policyholder's policy number and last name; without them, report by phone. The form recommends logging in if you are a Nationwide customer.
An adjuster handles the claim; Nationwide also uses the name "claims associate". A claim against the other driver's policy is a third-party claim. Your claim under your own policy is a first-party claim.

When a business vehicle caused the crash
Report by phone if you were hit by a business vehicle insured by Nationwide: Nationwide's business claims page says online filing is restricted to policyholders. Nationwide's contact page gives 1-800-421-3535 for commercial claims, while its Harleysville claims page lists 1-800-892-8877 for commercial auto, business, and human services claims. See the guide to injury claims involving company vehicles for that type of crash.
Nationwide's business claims FAQ tells its business policyholders that, for a third-party injury or property damage claim, it evaluates coverage and investigates the loss before working toward a settlement or denial. The same FAQ says claims professionals "strive for same-day contact" after submission; that statement addresses its business policyholders.
Nationwide's personal claims FAQ asks its own customers to send accident-related letters, notices, and legal papers promptly. The FAQ tells those customers, "You may be asked to submit documentation of your loss", and says it may also request treatment information.
As of November 5, 2026, Nationwide's claim pages do not address recorded statements; read the recorded insurance statement guide when the adjuster asks to record the call.
Get the other driver's name, insurer, and policy number at the scene, photograph the insurance card, vehicles, and plates, and collect witness names. Request the police report using the police crash report guide.

How much will the other driver's Nationwide policy pay?
The other driver's Nationwide policy pays up to its coverage limit, even when the injury is worth more. Nationwide's liability page defines a limit this way: "A limit is the maximum dollar amount your insurance may pay per event."
Bodily injury liability coverage pays for harm the policyholder is legally responsible for after a crash. Nationwide's liability page includes the injured person's medical bills and lost income, up to the coverage limit. The same page tells policyholders: "If you carry only the state-minimum required liability car insurance with the lowest limits and you're responsible for a bad covered accident, you would have to pay the balance of the claims that exceed your policy limits."
The least required bodily injury coverage in the states below is smaller than several injury ranges on this page. Ask the adjuster in writing for the actual limit on the other driver's policy. Keep that request with the documents for your car accident settlement demand.

How does Nationwide insurance value pain and suffering?
As of November 5, 2026, Nationwide's claim pages do not publish a method or figure for pain and suffering. The injury and its treatment set the value of pain and suffering.
In its June 23, 2008 Dougherty order, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California described one woman's claim with AMCO Insurance Company in 2003 and 2004. The court recorded a Colossus range of $26,522 to $32,102 and an arbitrator's award of $107,874, including $100,000 for pain and suffering. The court said the software took selected claim-file information and produced a settlement range based on settlements reached before lawsuits within AMCO's parent group. The court said the software excluded jury verdicts, arbitration awards, and settlements reached after lawsuits.
The California court's 2008 account of AMCO's 2003 and 2004 process also said an adjuster needed a manager's permission to make an offer outside the software's range. The woman sued AMCO for bad faith, meaning an insurer's unreasonable claim handling for which the law can require compensation. The court granted AMCO summary judgment on that claim, ending it in AMCO's favor; the court table below gives the amounts and outcome.
The AMCO record describes one Nationwide company's practice in 2003 and 2004; the research available on November 5, 2026 found no court or regulator record of the software Nationwide companies use today. See how Colossus works for the software topic.

How long does a Nationwide insurance claim take to pay?
The Illinois Department of Insurance's 2025 report found that half of the paid third-party car claims in the 107 files its examiners reviewed were paid within 53 days and half took longer. The department reviewed 13 Nationwide companies, including Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, AMCO Insurance Company, and Depositors Insurance Company, for September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2023. The report does not identify how many of those car claims involved injuries.
In the same report, the examiners found that half of paid first-party car claims in the files they reviewed were paid within 14 days and half took longer. The department reported no criticisms of the paid first-party files.
The same report identified one of the 107 third-party files, less than 1%, without a reasonable written explanation for delay. The Illinois department's May 28, 2025 consent order required those companies to pay a $29,000 civil forfeiture, without admitting fault.
Those findings describe paid car claims in the examination. They do not set a payment deadline for your injury claim. Follow the settlement timing guide for the claim's stages and the guide to discussing a settlement with an adjuster when responding to an offer.
Is Nationwide good at paying claims?
The NAIC's 2025 private passenger auto records give Nationwide Insurance Company of America a complaint index of 0.72, against the national figure of 1.00. The NAIC records each company separately, so match the company in the table to the one on your policy or letter.
A complaint index compares a company's share of closed, confirmed complaints with its share of premiums. The NAIC includes complaints supplied by state insurance departments after they are closed and confirmed. The NAIC's national index is always 1.00; an index below 1.00 means fewer confirmed complaints than the company's premium share would predict.
| Nationwide company | 2025 closed, confirmed complaints (NAIC) | 2025 private passenger auto index (NAIC) |
|---|---|---|
| Nationwide Insurance Company of America | 39 | 0.72 |
| Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company | 13 | 0.27 |
| Nationwide General Insurance Company | 19 | 0.48 |
| Nationwide Property and Casualty Insurance Company | 16 | 0.55 |
| Nationwide Affinity Insurance Company of America | 2 | 0.36 |
| AMCO Insurance Company | 0 | 0.00 |
| Depositors Insurance Company | 2 | 0.69 |
| Titan Insurance Company | 2 | 1.36 |
In the NAIC's rows with zero to three confirmed complaints, adding a single complaint changes the index substantially. Read the complaint count alongside the index.

What have courts decided in Nationwide insurance injury claims?
The court records below include claims allowed to continue, an affirmed judgment, and rulings for Nationwide companies. Each result concerns the named company and the facts of that case.
A policy-limits demand offers to settle for the full coverage limit and can include a deadline. Damages means compensation for harm. A general release ends all claims against the insured, beyond the particular claim in the demand.
| State and court | Year | What happened | The result | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
California: U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California | 2020 | After a heavy-impact rear collision with an uninsured driver in 2017, a business auto customer sought uninsured motorist coverage for blood clots in his leg and lungs. | Nationwide Agribusiness Insurance Company offered $175,000 on August 21, 2018, then $350,000 on October 16, 2018. The driver's lawyer sent a letter dated March 8, 2019 with a time-limited policy-limits demand for the $1 million per-accident limit. The company accepted the demand and agreed to pay the full limit on April 4, 2019. The court allowed the bad faith claim to proceed on November 17, 2020. | The research has no later ruling after the November 17, 2020 Collins order. |
California: U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California | 2008 | The woman settled with the other driver for the $30,000 policy limit. Her claim under her own AMCO Insurance Company policy's $100,000 underinsured motorist coverage ran from 2003 to 2006. | AMCO's Colossus range was $26,522 to $32,102. The arbitrator awarded $107,874, including $100,000 for pain and suffering, and AMCO paid $72,874. She sued for bad faith. The court granted AMCO summary judgment in 2008, explaining that she had rejected AMCO's offer and collected more in arbitration. | The Dougherty order was filed June 23, 2008; no appeal was found in the research. |
Illinois: U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois | 2022 | Two people stopped to help a disabled driver and were struck by another driver; one suffered serious injuries and the other died. | The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois refused to dismiss the section 155 claim against AMCO Insurance Company on October 25, 2022 after the company denied underinsured motorist coverage because their car was not a "covered auto" under its business policy. | The Polk order tested the complaint's allegations at an early stage. The research has no later outcome. |
Georgia: U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia; Eleventh Circuit | 2016 and 2017 | A 2005 crash killed a woman; Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company insured the driver. | The driver had a $100,000 per-person limit. The family offered to settle for that limit with a limited release and a 10-day deadline. Nationwide answered late and insisted on a general release. A state jury awarded $5.83 million in 2009. A federal jury found Nationwide negligent or in bad faith. The court entered an $8,135,873.29 judgment against Nationwide on May 25, 2016. The Eleventh Circuit affirmed on July 7, 2017. | The Camacho judgment was affirmed in an unpublished opinion. |
Florida: U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit | 2016 | A driver insured by Titan Insurance Company struck a motorcyclist in Pensacola in 2007, crushing the motorcyclist's left leg. | Titan's policy limits were $10,000 per person and $20,000 per accident. The company offered the $10,000 per-person limit. The lawyer for the motorcyclist followed with a demand listing eight conditions and a 20-day deadline. A nearly $2 million judgment was later entered against the insured driver. The Eleventh Circuit returned the driver's bad faith claim against Titan for trial in its August 8, 2016 decision. | The unpublished ruling found disputed facts requiring trial. The research has no final outcome. |
Arizona: U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona | 2020 | The injured man rejected four offers of the policy limit in exchange for a release. | The U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona granted AMCO Insurance Company partial summary judgment on May 12, 2020, finding it had diligently sought settlement; AMCO paid its $250,000 per-person limit and the excess insurer paid $800,000 in a May 2019 settlement. | The Encompass order ruled for AMCO on the issue before the court. |
Virginia: U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit | 2024 | A customer sought uninsured motorist coverage from Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company without first getting a judgment against the driver at fault. | In Virginia's Johnson case, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit affirmed the claim's failure on June 25, 2024 under the prior rule, while noting the April 2024 change: crashes on or after July 1, 2024 no longer require that judgment first. | The unpublished opinion affirmed the earlier order. The court limited the changed rule to the later crash dates. |
The Georgia and Florida records involved offers to settle within low policy limits with deadlines. The Arizona court found AMCO had tried to settle, while the California and Illinois cases disputed the customer's own coverage.
The Illinois court's 2022 Polk order concerned section 155, which allows an extra award for "vexatious and unreasonable" delay or refusal. The court allowed that claim to continue based on the allegations before it.

What does your own Nationwide policy pay after a crash?
Your own Nationwide policy's medical payments, personal injury protection, and uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage address injuries to you and your passengers. Nationwide's coverage pages describe each type below; read your policy to find the coverage and limits you bought.
| Your coverage | What Nationwide's page says |
|---|---|
Medical payments coverage | Nationwide says this helps pay medical costs for you and your passengers after a covered auto accident. Its page also says a pedestrian hit by a car may be covered. |
Personal injury protection | Nationwide describes this as "no-fault" coverage and says it is required in some states. |
Uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage | Nationwide lists covered medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages for you or your passengers. |
Underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage | Nationwide lists covered medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages for you or your passengers when the other driver has too little insurance. |
The injury ranges above apply to your uninsured or underinsured motorist claim up to your coverage limit. Follow the underinsured motorist claim steps when the other driver's coverage is too small.
What a Nationwide policy asks you to do
In Cleary on February 19, 2026, the Ohio Court of Appeals, Tenth District, quoted a Nationwide auto policy that required a person seeking coverage to cooperate in the claim's investigation, settlement, or defense. The policy quoted by that Ohio court also required recorded interviews or examinations under oath as reasonably requested and, for an injured person, examinations by company-selected doctors as reasonably required.
Those are the words of the policy quoted in that Ohio case. Read your own Nationwide policy's requirements when you claim under it.
If you were driving for work when you were hurt, the workers' compensation guide covers that separate claim topic.

Your state sets the injury lawsuit deadline for a claim against the driver or company responsible for the crash. The statute of limitations is that filing deadline; use the table and the state injury filing-deadline guide to find the relevant law.
| State | Injury lawsuit deadline | Statute or court source |
|---|---|---|
| California | Two years | Code of Civil Procedure 335.1 |

| Georgia | You have two years from when the right to sue arises. | OCGA 9-3-33, quoted in Williams v. Durden |
| Florida | For negligence claims arising after March 24, 2023, the period is two years. | Fla. Stat. 95.11(5)(a); chapter 2023-15 |
| Arizona | Two years | A.R.S. 12-542 |

| Virginia | Two years | Va. Code 8.01-243(A) |

What steps should you take for a Nationwide insurance injury claim?
Save the crash evidence, identify the company on the policy, and report the claim. Keep the claim number, coverage limit, and filing deadline with the documents you send to the adjuster.
Save the insurance card and crash evidence
Get the other driver's name and policy number. Photograph the insurance card, vehicles, and license plates, take witness names, and request the crash report from the police.
Read the company name on the policy or letter
Find the full company name on the other driver's insurance card or the claim letter. Compare it with Nationwide's affiliated-company list, including AMCO, Depositors, Allied, Harleysville, and Titan.
Report the crash by phone or online
Nationwide's contact page gives 1-800-421-3535 for reporting auto claims at any time. Its online form accepts reports from someone involved in a crash with a policyholder and asks for that policyholder's policy number and last name. Without those details, use the phone line.
Keep the claim number with your documents
Nationwide's text-update page says you can text 252467 after reporting the claim and putting your mobile number on file. Its claim tracker says to include the claim number when sending documents to your claims associate, by mail to P.O. Box 182068, Columbus, OH 43218-2068, or by fax to 800-363-8904.
Ask the adjuster for the policy limit in writing
Ask for the amount of bodily injury liability coverage on the other driver's Nationwide policy. The policy limit controls how much that policy pays toward your claim.
Read your own policy for medical and motorist coverage
Look for medical payments coverage, personal injury protection, and uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage on your own policy. Nationwide's coverage pages describe these ways to cover injuries to you and your passengers.
Learn the full course of the injury before settling
Wait until you understand the injury and its treatment before accepting a settlement. Include the treatment course when reviewing the offer.
Record the deadline and review the claim
Write down your state's injury lawsuit deadline and read your own policy's claim deadline. Use the free AI calculator with attorney review to review the injury, treatment, and coverage details.
Before settling, read about knowing how far your injury has healed and reviewing the first settlement offer. The free AI calculator with attorney review uses your claim details to help you review compensation.
